Ishinpo (※)
During the reign of Emperor En'yu (969-984) of the Heian dynasty, the thousands of volumes of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy containing ancient and modern wisdom on wishing for health and longevity were unravelled.
After conducting research on over 1,000 medicinal ingredients, he compiled a total of 30 volumes of prescriptions for maintaining the health and beauty of the body and mind.
This is the oldest medical encyclopedia in Japan, "Ishinpo." The whereabouts of the original, which was presented to Emperor En'yu as a secret formula that crystallized knowledge, are unknown, but a copy remains as a national treasure. Many of its descriptions make sense from the perspective of modern medicine.
Many of the more than 1,000 herbal ingredients are also used as medicinal and aromatic ingredients.
